OLIVER AND OPAL

The School of Tots and Brats was in a great flurry of excitement as the last day of the term came to a close. Spring break was starting from tomorrow and all the cubs, fawns and ducklings were already making plans for the holidays talking nine to the dozen on their way out.  “Heya Oliver! The guys are going hiking up a new trail that has opened up for campers. Wanna join us and make them spot us for some photos?” “Photos? Whad’ya mean, Jer?” “Pics, man! These crazy lot click pics of critters like us for all to see and go Awwwww…who knows, you could be very, very famous one day…like Oliver the Opossum!” “Uh-oh! Well, ok I guess…I'll join you guys. This is going to be fun!” “You bet! And they give you food too if you let them pet you and don't bare your fangs or claws….hohohoh!” Oliver sprinted and scurried over pebbles and through dandelions towards his home in the dogwood grove. Gladys, his mama was busy baking pie from the freshly picked grapes which she bought at the Vineyard...

FADED COLOURS, FRESH MEMORIES

RED SHOES  I still remember the happiest days of my life when Rivka all of five years was delighted beyond measure to take me home as her birthday gift. A pair of red leather shoes which she always wanted. She held me tenderly, close to her lil heart which spoke volumes. Rivka wore me to the park, playgrounds and picnics. **** Out of nowhere came that ill fated day, when I could hear horrendous screams and crowds of panic-stricken people were crammed into a truck. Rivka was howling and clinging to her mother. We arrived at a hellish place where I was brutally ripped off Rivka’s feet and thrown onto a pile of other shoes.  Rivka and the others were shoved into a windowless room and locked in. The chimneys of surrounding buildings belched out putrid smoke. I never saw her again. **** Years later, staring at the pristine room and men working in a calm manner made me relax in the cool confin...

HOLY RELIC

The church glowed russet in the harkening light of dawn,  The stone walls, verses of amber as the slanting sun rays spilled through the hawthorn The decrepit door, once honey brown The flaking paint now shades of taupe, in the high August noon they drench and drown Beckoning light in, in splashes of a kaleidoscope from stained glass windows The old church is the sanity of these hills, surrounded by fragrant cedars and junipers  It has greeted blazing summers, blustery breeze Now it sings with the wind and embraces the sunshine, listening to the rhythm of quenching rain. The church nesting on a knoll of wildflowers and dunes of grass Conjures a fond dream on a velvety green moss  As the sunrise hums to the fading stars,  The spires and steeples glow silver at the tops. The bells oh so huge rolled the pealing Through the vales and hamlet for every death or wedding  Through summer and spring the church spire reached into clouds or a quilt of cyan blue Unbroken goss...

HALLOW'D

There's a blush of autumn in my heart  A thousand wreaths of laurel sprigs adorn a forgotten vault A dancing flame as golden as the swaying corn Blooms into a euphoric ruby-red heartbeat, as wild as a poppy born I paint the skies with the deepest cornflower blue And swan shaped puffed clouds of the radiant citrine hue The gloaming canopy is a mix of nectar and honey  When moonbeams kiss the ocean rolling in a rapturous melody  The pallor on cheeks thrums and glows Stolen glances with you are like frozen winter rose  The sunbeams danced in rhythm to my heartbeat The moon dazzled among waltzing stars on a sequined carpet  The tide in my heart throbbed and rode On the swell of the dizzying storm quite hallowed In the drifting snows or sun-drenched summers You're my heartbeat forever and forever. ©️ Sangeetha Kamath Pic Courtesy: Pixabay
