CHAPTER 3: THE JADE SHAMBHALA

This episode is part of a short story series titled The Jade Shambhala.

Tasseography is as old as time. The stories in the tea leaves will leave you in a spin, while the healing tea that precedes anchors you like gripping oak roots.

7 days, 7 stories, 7 different exotic blends of brew from the Far East and unique tea leaves reading for each.

                             CHAPTER 3

                    SPRING EQUINOX

 Tang-hng Bí-jîn (Oriental Beauty leaves)

The morning mist on the Yun Shan Ridge does not merely roll over the peaks; it breathes. Right in the middle of the Spring Equinox, the rigid spine of the winter chill finally breaks, replaced by a tart apple blossom aroma and streaks of sunbeams lancing through the budding Magnolia tree in the centre of the garden.

The slopes of the mountain are alive with the pale pink of wild peach blossoms and the deep, waxy green of emerging tea shoots.

Inside the Jade Shambhala Tea House a single stick of Agarwood incense burns in a cracked celadon burner, its thin ribbon of smoke curling upwards.

On the counter sits a woven bamboo tray piled high with fresh spring bakes—fluffy steamed rice cakes infused with Peach Blossom petals and sweet Mung Bean pastries that smell comfortingly of toasted grain and sugar.

The sliding screen doors are thrown wide open to the courtyard garden. The stone paths are lined with damp moss, bursts of wild primrose, and clusters of cream-colored Frangipani shed the last of the morning dew. The scent of wet earth, floral nectar, and warming iron kettles weaves together, sealing the tea room inside as a pristine, timeless pocket of the ridge.

A client is trudging in toward our door ! Finally! It’s been a while. I was starting to get rusty without the tea readings and the aroma livening me up. I wish Xiu had let me out in the garden earlier. I need to loosen up my stiff wintry limbs, bound up the trees, and chase the mynahs.

Stealth mode!

As soon as she opens the door, I’m gonna whoosh outta here like a lightning bolt. As much as I crave to inhale the exotic teas, my priority is a good wiggle and shake and a jog!

But no. Xiu gives me that look. The look that means my paws stay exactly where they are. Fine. I tuck them back under my chest. I'll watch the steam rise from the clay kettle instead. But my ears are locked onto the pathway. Someone with a heavy heart is crossing the threshold.

Moon Glow sat across the polished camphor wood counter, her white paws tucked neatly under her white mane. Her radiant Olive green eyes, clear and unbothered, followed the steady rise of the steam from the clay kettle.

"You are exceptionally vigilant this morning, Moon Glow," Lin Xiu-Ying said softly, using a bamboo cloth to wipe down the already immaculate surface of the tea table. "The mountain paths are quiet today. The winter snow is buried."

Moon Glow let out a brief, rhythmic purr, then extended one front paw, deliberately tapping the edge of an empty, white porcelain tea bowl. She didn't look at Xiu-Ying but stared fixedly toward the stone pathway outside the garden gate.

"Ah," Xiu-Ying murmured, setting the cloth down. "A traveler crosses the threshold."

The iron wind chime at the door jingled and a woman stepped into the room. She carried the heavy, intoxicating scent of crushed stems and cut petals, but her posture was entirely weighed down. Her hands were raw, stained with plant chlorophyll, and trembling slightly as she pulled off her straw hat.

"Welcome to The Jade Shambhala," Xiu-Ying said, gesturing to the bamboo stool across the counter. "The air is cold on the path, but the hearth is hot."

The woman collapsed onto the stool, her chest rising and falling in a tight, suffocating rhythm. "My name is Feng. I'm a florist from the valley market –the one who designed and sold the massive ceremonial decor of white camellias and lilies for the governor's grand estate celebration down in the capital city last week."

She smelled like an entire greenhouse had  exploded, but underneath the odor of green sap, there was a sharp scent of panic.

"A magnificent display, no doubt," Xiu-Ying said, her fingers running along the tea caddy.

"Camellias for longevity, lilies for a clean slate. It was a nightmare," Feng whispered sarcastically, her eyes wide with exhaustion. "The clients... They were completely ungrateful. They demanded endless revisions at the front gate, disputed the payment during the actual reception and created a scene because a single petal was turned. Then refused to settle the final invoice simply to assert their dominance."

She leaned forward, her voice cracking. "I haven't slept since. Every time I close my eyes, I hear their sharp barbs and I feel like my entire creative energy has been completely drained. I am suffocating, Xiu-Ying."

Xiu-Ying remained completely calm. "The public market operates entirely on transactional demands. When you cast pearls before a swine they will always try to reduce it to a naught. But their chaos is not your concern."

Xiu-Ying reached for the earthenware jar. "Today, we clear the aura."

Inside the wide, shallow clay Tê-toh a heavy pinch of Tang-hng Bí-jîn (Oriental Beauty leaves)—intricately twisted strands of deep copper, amber, and silver down were arranged.

Xiu-Ying hand-blended them alongside thinly sliced ribbons of sun-dried honeyed apricots and the soft, golden flesh of tangy spring Loquats, creating a vibrant botanical mosaic at the base of the vessel.

She poured the steaming mountain water from the iron kettle, ensuring the stream was gentle and low to allow the fruit and leaves to steep evenly. Instantly, an incredibly rich, intoxicating fragrance filled the warm room—a vivid, sharp blend reminiscent of bright Muscatel grapes, wildflower honey, and ripe, sun-baked orchard fruit completely cut through the lingering dampness of the spring monsoons.

"Drink," Xiu-Ying commanded, sliding the cup forward. "This is a remedy to help clear the tight, stagnant heat from a stressed chest."

Feng took the cup with both hands, inhaling the steam. As the copper strands slowly unfurled in the deep amber liquor, the first slow sip delivered a naturally sweet, slightly tart burst across the palate. It was a profoundly bright, unmasked flavor completely untouched by bitterness, leaving a long, refreshing warmth that instantly cleared the chest and settled the spirit.

The crisp, sweet liquid made her shoulders drop an inch. The pulling tension behind her eyes began to soften.

The hot water hits the leaves, and the scent fills my nose.

"Now," Xiu-Ying said, watching the leaves unfurl in the residual water. "Let us read the leaves."

The loose leaves had scattered wide against the white porcelain walls of the gaiwan, leaving a completely pristine, empty circle directly in the center of the vessel.

At the very edge, three small leaves had clumped together into a jagged bundle, completely isolated from the rest of the map.

My cue. Time to execute. I stand up, stretch my spine until it makes a small cracking sound, and saunter down the wood.

Moon Glow planted herself on the wide ledge facing the window, with her back to the valley. Turning towards the pane, with an agile leap she grabbed the bamboo blinds and hooking her toe beans into a slat, pulled it down shutting the view from the window.

"No entry through this glass." Xiu-Ying pointed her bamboo pick at the porcelain bowl. "Look here, Feng. The leaves have called an absolute separation. This cluster at the outer rim? That is their noisy circus. They are locked outside your universe now.”

Feng stared at the white space in the center. "And the empty circle?"

"The empty space is your sovereign sanctuary," Xiu-Ying delivered the definitive verdict, her voice unyielding. "The universe used their ungrateful behavior as a lesson to prevent you future massive losses. This was only a dent in your armor, Feng. Take it as a recce to be formidable and assertive in future. Your contracts with all your business going forward will yield fruit."

Xiu-Ying looked at the window where Moon Glow stood guard. "You do not owe the public your sleep or your creative energy. Your boundary is airtight. Let the valley lines go completely silent."

Feng looked down at the empty center of the cup, then looked at Moon Glow, whose solid white frame completely cut off the distant town. An unshakeable silence settled into her mind. For the first time in a week, the phantom arguments in her head went dead cold.

To permanently sever the residual grip of the upheaval, Xiu-Ying initiated the final ritual. To break the memory of the incident, she lit a single, sun-dried splinter of wild Mugwort root on the charcoal embers, casting a thick, medicinal, and clearing vapor through the air.

Next, she retrieved a small, hand-woven linen cloth that had been thoroughly heated over the iron kettle’s steam. Infused with a sharp drop of wild peppermint oil, she pressed the steaming compress directly into Feng’s raw, sap-stained hands. The sudden, intense heat forced the florist's raw, twitching fingers to loosen drawing the tight, stagnant heat down from her chest and channeling it safely back into the ground.

Xiu-Ying took the gaiwan and deliberately overturned the porcelain bowl onto a fresh bed of dry pine needles by the hearth, burying the leaves face-down in the cinders. The finality was absolute and the sanctuary returned to its majestic stillness.

  1. Very nicely written. Moon Glow sat across the polished camphor wood counter, her white paws tucked neatly under her white mane. Her radiant Olive green eyes, clear and unbothered, followed the steady rise of the steam from the clay kettle. These types of sentences literally bring the scene in front of us. I am getting drawn to these JADE SHAMBALA episodes😃 Also, the cover pics match very well.

GATOS MEUS QUERIDOS

Chapter 1                    Muay The Warrior Cat Muay Thai came to be called so for the feisty and spirited little thing she was, reminiscent of the intense and energetic martial art of Muay Thai . Her bold personality inspired me to give her a name that reflected her sass and vigor. Muay Thai's antics were the stuff of legends. She was a buzz of energy, always getting into mischief and mayhem. Whether she was chasing invisible bugs, leaping over furniture like an acrobat or wrestling with toys, Muay Thai was a force to be reckoned with. Her favorite pastime was "attacking" my hands and feet, using her lightning-fast reflexes and razor-sharp teeth. It was a game she loved, and one that always left me in stitches. Despite her tough-as-nails persona, Muay Thai was also a total softie at heart. She loved nothing more than curling up in my lap and purring contentedly, her eyes gleaming with adoration before snoozing into the deepest of sl...

FAIRY ROSE AND THE THREE WISHES (DAY 5, POST 2)

While there was no dearth of dispiriting news floating around during the pandemic, this was one unexpected blow! How deeply I was mourning the passing of my former school headmistress, even as I put one more chapter to rest in the confines of my treasured memories.  I was fortunate to have 'Sister' as my headmistress in primary school. Although I feared her greatly, I was also one of those lucky few who got to see her nurturing side. She had made it a point to give me company every evening while I waited for my father to pick me up from school, which would inevitably be long after dismissal time due to his work constraints.   We're talking of the '80s here when there were no after-school facilities in my beloved hometown. I would constantly be the lone student in the portico and it meant a lot to have an authoritarian figure looking out for my safety and well-being. I was one those painfully shy nerds who by default went into the good books of the teachers and was in th...

TAKEN (NaNoWriMo Day 8 )

TAKEN  The floor boards creaked and my footsteps echoed in the vast emptiness. Shafts of moving lights filtered through a skylight from the high ceiling. In the dim murkiness, I could only see towering silhouettes. Unrecognisable. Unidentifiable. Where was I and how did I come here? Was I in an accident or had I bumped my head, lost my memory and wandered off to this abandoned structure? I only had questions and not a single answer. I felt about in my pockets for a phone. I could do with some light in here. Luck was on my side. I turned on the flashlight and saw a litter of weathered wooden crates, soggy cardboard boxes and newspapers littering the floor.  I picked one up. The print was smudged and illegible. What on earth! It seemed to be a warehouse. Paint and plaster was peeling off the walls. Where was the door? I need to get out of here! I turned my flash...

CHIFFON STREAKS (DAY 3, POST 2)

The night was restless, silent and too long Excitedly waiting for a new dawn to arrive with her chirpy song Shedding the sable cloak off her shoulders Darkness rolls from the arms of the moon alabaster  Brave is the sky when the moon disappears  Vanishing from sight, the twinkling stars too coyly obscures Wriggling like a newborn from a fleece blanket The rays washes the frills of clouds in crimson and scarlet Gauzy shimmer appears on the horizon And I see a sliver of crest of the rising sun Gliding across the sky lazily, the tangerine fireball shimmers brightly Rising over treetops and bathing the rooftops nascently The air is perfumed as buds and blooms joyously unfurl The mild gusts of breeze ruffles the waves of my tousled curls The apricot sky breaks into splashes of colors, ribbons and streaks I watch the new day waltz in to paint all my dreams. ©️ Sangeetha Kamath Image by Calla Negra from Pixabay
