HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

The sleek steel grey landline with it's cordless handset gleams in the mid morning sunlight. It's only a fixture on the tabletop these past several years yet loved and flaunted for old times sake. Also, for the numerous times the handset had nestled in our palms. The vintage feel of it and the stronghold of memories I associate it with beats the smartphone by miles.

It has in turn been a confidante of our precious moments, some idling talk, some annoyance oh yes ! and all before Whatsapp made an entry into our lives and the poor dear was no longer in demand.

The world was at our fingertips. It doesn't complain, doesn't whimper, not even a sigh, murmur or a slightest hint at a whisper of life for the past decade and more! Except…

On Thursday the daylights were socked out of me! Lost in mundane chores, I had my gloved hands deep in a pile of soapy water scrubbing away at the breakfast dishes. The usual swell of silence was harshly rend by the landline from the living room!

Who! What!....the landline sang??? Uh… rang… No! It actually sang although out of tune! In a weird staccato Morse Code beep. Not the long drawn, blaring  *triiiing triiiiing triiiing*...

Across the doorway to the kitchen and from where I'm standing, gives me a wide view of the entire sitting room.

In addition, the pulsing orange flashes from the screen of the handset froze me to the spot.

Hands soaked in dish soap. Dripping gloves. And an urgency of various pitches from this long dead gadget! Couldn't I move faster…

The screen was flashing lights in complete disarray to the goofy tunes coming out of the phone but there was no caller id and no number was displayed!

Moment of annoyance ( at that moment) Picking up the handset, I set it down again in the holder without uttering a 'Hello' and with a last gasp it drifted to deep sleep again. Until…!

That night, as I scrolled through IG, a random post showed up in my feed saying that one of the ways our passed on loved ones try communicating with us is through various devices-- electronic or electrical and it usually catches our attention. It's hard not to grasp the anomaly.

Ok! Moment of goosebumps! Was it dad on the landline in the morning? Could it be? Was this post a coincidence or an attempt at clarification?

A day or two ago before this incident, I did ask him for a sign though, but in a different form. Did he choose this medium? Unfortunately, the message was lost both ways. I didn't speak into the handset, neither do I decode Morse!

Ah well! For whatever it's worth, certainly there's a positive, guardian energy in my auric field. The device did get my attention, nevermind the slow registering into my limited human understanding.

There was no other attempt at contact or a bizarre situation. The astral realm has gone silent on me since then...

The phone is sleeping like a baby 💜

But am I?

  1. First of all, a catchy title. Reminds me of Adele's song. Coming to the story, a good mix of supernatural plus emotions. Maybe it was indeed a medium. If only you had picked up! Or maybe it was meant to just ring, to make you aware of the presence of a guardian angel.

  2. Such a poignant one. O’ how the Universe sends these subtle signs, only if we mortals could decipher. But at the end of the day, it satisfies our craving soul that ‘they’ did try to reach us! It’s all in that bond that transcends boundaries. Loved reading it!

GATOS MEUS QUERIDOS

Chapter 1                    Muay The Warrior Cat Muay Thai came to be called so for the feisty and spirited little thing she was, reminiscent of the intense and energetic martial art of Muay Thai . Her bold personality inspired me to give her a name that reflected her sass and vigor. Muay Thai's antics were the stuff of legends. She was a buzz of energy, always getting into mischief and mayhem. Whether she was chasing invisible bugs, leaping over furniture like an acrobat or wrestling with toys, Muay Thai was a force to be reckoned with. Her favorite pastime was "attacking" my hands and feet, using her lightning-fast reflexes and razor-sharp teeth. It was a game she loved, and one that always left me in stitches. Despite her tough-as-nails persona, Muay Thai was also a total softie at heart. She loved nothing more than curling up in my lap and purring contentedly, her eyes gleaming with adoration before snoozing into the deepest of sl...

FAIRY ROSE AND THE THREE WISHES (DAY 5, POST 2)

While there was no dearth of dispiriting news floating around during the pandemic, this was one unexpected blow! How deeply I was mourning the passing of my former school headmistress, even as I put one more chapter to rest in the confines of my treasured memories.  I was fortunate to have 'Sister' as my headmistress in primary school. Although I feared her greatly, I was also one of those lucky few who got to see her nurturing side. She had made it a point to give me company every evening while I waited for my father to pick me up from school, which would inevitably be long after dismissal time due to his work constraints.   We're talking of the '80s here when there were no after-school facilities in my beloved hometown. I would constantly be the lone student in the portico and it meant a lot to have an authoritarian figure looking out for my safety and well-being. I was one those painfully shy nerds who by default went into the good books of the teachers and was in th...

TAKEN (NaNoWriMo Day 8 )

TAKEN  The floor boards creaked and my footsteps echoed in the vast emptiness. Shafts of moving lights filtered through a skylight from the high ceiling. In the dim murkiness, I could only see towering silhouettes. Unrecognisable. Unidentifiable. Where was I and how did I come here? Was I in an accident or had I bumped my head, lost my memory and wandered off to this abandoned structure? I only had questions and not a single answer. I felt about in my pockets for a phone. I could do with some light in here. Luck was on my side. I turned on the flashlight and saw a litter of weathered wooden crates, soggy cardboard boxes and newspapers littering the floor.  I picked one up. The print was smudged and illegible. What on earth! It seemed to be a warehouse. Paint and plaster was peeling off the walls. Where was the door? I need to get out of here! I turned my flash...

CHIFFON STREAKS (DAY 3, POST 2)

The night was restless, silent and too long Excitedly waiting for a new dawn to arrive with her chirpy song Shedding the sable cloak off her shoulders Darkness rolls from the arms of the moon alabaster  Brave is the sky when the moon disappears  Vanishing from sight, the twinkling stars too coyly obscures Wriggling like a newborn from a fleece blanket The rays washes the frills of clouds in crimson and scarlet Gauzy shimmer appears on the horizon And I see a sliver of crest of the rising sun Gliding across the sky lazily, the tangerine fireball shimmers brightly Rising over treetops and bathing the rooftops nascently The air is perfumed as buds and blooms joyously unfurl The mild gusts of breeze ruffles the waves of my tousled curls The apricot sky breaks into splashes of colors, ribbons and streaks I watch the new day waltz in to paint all my dreams. ©️ Sangeetha Kamath Image by Calla Negra from Pixabay
