Chapter 3:

                  Mission Muay Incognito

As I continued lounging on the window ledge long after sundown, the garden came alive with chirping crickets and hooting owlets. I felt an inexplicable pang as I missed rolling around and diving into the catnip with Muay under a rising moon.

Muay, had vanished into the night, leaving me with only the echoes of our rollicking adventures.

A while ago, a wispy figure had materialized before me, his tall, slender form piercing me with eyes that shone like starfire from distant galaxies.

He wore a long, flowing velvet cloak in a midnight blue with intricate silver embroidery. His tall cone shaped hat was splattered with prints of stars and crescent moons. His eyes gleamed with an otherworldly intensity as he surveyed the suburban landscape of freshly manicured lawns with clusters of trees burgeoning with fragrant Frangipani flowers.

He remained invisible to the humans, his presence only perceptible to felines.

His eyes, however, remained fixed on me while I was lazily splayed under a pool of late afternoon sunshine on the window ledge hemmed by box sills of hyacinths.

My ears had perked up as I sensed an unusual electric charge. Our minds connected in a way that transcended human understanding.

His presence seemed to command attention, and the air around me vibrated with an unseen energy. I couldn't help but feel drawn to him, piqued by the enigmatic visitor.

Looking intensely into my green eyes, he smiled, his voice low and soothing. "Greetings, good Nyx’or! I,Thorwynn, feline sage and keeper of secrets of the cosmos bring forth assistance from the kingdom of Aventura and convey a message to you for a brief meeting with His Excellency–Emperor Zorvath. It's about a certain Muay, a bonny cat with fur as glossy as the mother of pearl.”

My eyes widened in surprise. This was the first time someone had called me by my real name—Nyx’or!

"How do you know my name …and about Muay?”

Thorwynn’s smile deepened. "Ah, yes. I have...information that suggests Muay's rightful place is here. Also about her feline companion, ‘Fluffnut’, who has been searching far and wide for his beloved, aren't you? he winked playfully.

As Thorwynn spoke, a subtle glow began to emanate from his cloak, illuminating the surrounding flowers and casting an ethereal light on the scene. The air seemed to vibrate with magic, and I was enchanted by his words.

Still bewildered, I blinked slowly. "I...I think..we could arrange a meeting between His Excellency Zorvath and me. But how did you know about my Muay?"

Thorwynn chuckled, his eyes twinkling with mirth. "Ah, my good Nyx'or, the secrets of the universe are mine to command. Let us simply say that the threads of fate have brought us and you to this moment. And I am here to guide them toward your reunion”.

Nyx’or, brave one," Thorwynn whispered, "Muay's spirit calls to you. She is lost in the shadows, where the moon dips into a forever eclipse. Will you embark on this quest to find her?"

With a determined mew, I accepted the challenge.

At sundown after a long conversation with Thorwynn, I reached the garden gate and bid goodbye to my heartbroken hu-mum and promised that I would return from my rescue mission after three full moons. She stood by the door, dazed and watched me go. I don't think she understood anything I mewed at all but smiled sadly as I followed Thorwynn's instructions to get to the spectral borderlands of Aventura.

Thorwynn nodded, a small smile playing on his lips."It seems the threads of fate are already in motion. The reunion of Muay and ‘Fluffnut’ shall soon be underway".

He began to fade away right before me like the morning mist and totally disappeared from the human realm.

With a primeval intuit I possessed as all cats mysteriously do, I padded through the deep, dark forest on the edge of the kingdom of Aventura. My ears folded in fear with every snap of a twig and rustle of leaves. But my radar senses helped me weave through the ancient trees that loomed above me, their gnarled branches ending in wraith like fingers reaching for the sky.

I had been searching for what felt like an eternity for my beloved Muay. She had vanished without a trace of a whisker or a fabric of fur, leaving me with only the echoes of our playful romps and the scent of her favourite fresh frangipani.

As I wandered deeper into the woods, the air thickened with an otherworldly energy. I sensed the presence of Zorvath, the regal emperor of Aventura rumored to possess all the secrets of the wandering and lost cats.

I had heard whispers of his abode nestled in a snug circle of thorny vines entwining a tower of glittering crystal that pierced the sky like a shard of light.

As I approached the tower, a soft hum began to vibrate through my paws. Zorvath was expecting me. The entrance, an intricately carved door adorned with symbols of the ancient runes of the Lost Worlds, swung open smoothly. I stepped inside, and the door closed noiselessly behind me, enveloping me in a warm, golden light.

Zorvath sat upon a polished throne made of jade, his eyes aglow with an icy blue flame. His long, sparkling silver hair cascaded down his back like a river of moonlight, and his voice was like the gentle lapping of waves against the damp sand.

"Greetings, young Nyx’or," he said, his eyes piercing mine. "I sense the weight of your heart. Your Muay is lost, and you seek my guidance to find her."

I meowed plaintively. Zorvath nodded sympathetically.

"Very well, I shall reveal to you the path to Muay's whereabouts. But first, you must answer a riddle. If you succeed, the way shall be revealed to you."

I leaned forward, my ears perked with anticipation. Zorvath smiled, his eyes glinting mischievously.

"What lies in the darkness of the forest, yet is not of the forest? What is born of the wild, yet soars on the wings of the speckled night?"

I furrowed my brow and squinted my eyes as I pondered the riddle. Suddenly, the answer burst forth in my mind like a supernova!

"The answer is an Owl !" I exclaimed jubilantly, my voice ringing through the tower.

Zorvath chuckled, his eyes twinkling with delight. "Ah, young Nyx'or, you are masterfully clever. The answer is indeed an Owl. And now, I shall reveal to you the path to Muay's whereabouts."

With a wave of his hand, a vision unfolded before me like a map. I saw a cozy home, nestled in a sun-drenched garden filled with catnip and lavender. I saw Muay, her fur shining like moonstone in the dancing sun rays, batting at a ball of yarn unenthusiastically.

Zorvath’s voice chimed in my ear, "The home lies due east, past a bluebell hillock beyond a wide patch of ripening berries. Follow the scent of fruit pies and fresh pastries. The sound of tinkling bells will be the sure-fire sign from Goddess Freyja who will unyieldingly be by your side throughout.”

I bowed my head in gratitude, my heart overflowing with thanks. Zorvath smiled, his eyes softening with the color of summer skies.

"May the heaths and moors rise up to meet your determined paws, young Nyx'or! May the wind be the force that carries you, and the stars brightly guide you on your path.Go forth bravely, and may you be reunited with your beloved Muay." His booming voice bounced off the walls, as His Excellency bestowed upon me a magical amulet, adorned with a glowing gem, fastening the clasp just above my right paw, hidden by my luxuriant fur. The small, delicate crystal was a Ryujinite," he explained.

"It will guide you through the shadows and protect you from harm. But remember, the crystal's power is only as strong as your own courage and determination! Always follow the lunar path, Brave Nyx’or”, Zorvath instructed. "It will lead you through treacherous landscapes and arduous hillsides. Trust your whiskers, and may the moon's guidance reunite you with Muay."

And so, with the amulet's gentle glow illuminating my wisdom, I set out on an epic odyssey to rescue Muay from the shadows.

With a spring in my step and a chirpy song in my heart, I set off towards the east, tracking the scent of fruit pies and to the hints of tinkling bells. The sun rose higher in the sky, casting a golden glow over the landscape.

I held a distinct void in my life, a gaping hole that once held the warmth and love of my sweet Muay. She had been taken in by a mysterious stranger, whisked away to a distant land. My heart ached with every waxing and waning moon. I couldn't shake the feeling that Muay needed me, that our bond remained unbroken despite the distance between us.

With a determined flick of my tail, I set out on a perilous journey to find Muay. I traversed dimly lit forests, crossed gravelly scorching paths, and braved craggy mountains.I strode strongly through fields and forests, meadows and glens, my paws barely touching the ground with excitement.

Guided by the whispers of the wind, the wisdom of ancient trees, and the songs of stars composed by my unseen guides, I followed the now strong trail of fruit pies and pastry crusts beyond the wild berry patches.

As I drew closer to my destination, the air thickened with anticipation and the Ryujinite thrummed in a rhythmic code. Even through the pounding of my tiny heart I was confident. I was protected by Zorvath’s powerful spells and incantations.

Undaunted, I pressed on, driven by my unwavering loyalty and love for Muay. The fate of our reunion hung in the balance, and I was determined to succeed.

As I approached the cozy home surrounded by clusters of lavender stalks, I saw Muay, her eyes shining like speckled garnets. Ah! There she was, my damsel held captive! Your knight is here to rescue you, milady!

And so the first leg of my journey was fruitful, thanks to the guidance of Zorvath and the power of my own determination. Now all we had to do was head back home nestled amidst the grove of fragrant Frangipani trees.

Elaine was busy preparing the menu, while Jesse and May Belle sat at the table, arguing over whose turn it was to do the dishes. "We should invite Leonie over for the Thanksgiving dinner ," Elaine said, wiping her flour-covered hands on her apron. Jesse's face lit up. "That's a great idea, Mom. I'm sure she'd love to come." May Belle scowled. "Why do we have to invite her? Hasn't she already distanced herself from us? Just when I thought it was a good riddance, you have to let her into our lives all over again !" "May Belle, that's not very nice," Elaine said gently. "She's our neighbor, and she's new in town. All alone ...

🪔DIWALIs OF DECEMBER 🪔

There used to be a golden age of annual vacations once upon a long forgotten time. These school holidays would invariably arrive after the first mid-week of November until school reopened on the first Monday of January in the coming year. Diwali that would have just gone by would be only a cozy affair with family and a few good friends at whose homes invitations would be extended for lunch or dinner with potluck themes.  But the real deal was the treat that was waiting for us back home. My parents, empty nesters would eagerly await the arrival of Babylou as soon as November arrived.  “There's a surprise for you later,” my father would chime as soon as she crossed the threshold. He thoughtfully bought a packet each of the various firecrackers available during the festive season and kept those aside.  These would be spread out in the morning sun until high noon everyday for a week before our arrival until they were fried to a crisp-- ready to crackle and spa...

She had met Jesse , and the encounter had left her feeling unsettled. His parents, on the other hand, had been warm and welcoming when they spoke to her over the common fence separating the houses. Mrs. Aaron –Elaine had offered Leonie to come by every afternoon for lunch before she left for work at Page & Paige. Leonie was so delighted at this offer that would save her the time to cook a meal and then rush to the bookshop. As she knocked on the door, it swung open to reveal Elaine, beaming with a warm smile. "Leonie, dear, come on in! We're so glad you could join us for lunch." Leonie stepped inside, her eyes adjusting to the bright interior. The h...

FIRSTS AND SECONDS

The day began like any other August morning in Singapore but the nip in the air embraced me a bit tenderly today and I just wanted that extra dose of coziness.  August 21st ! Today marks a significant milestone in my life - the anniversary of my open heart surgery . It's a day I'll never forget, a day that gave me a second chance at life. As I look back on the past year, I'm filled with gratitude and awe at the journey I've been on. An Open Heart Surgery and a collateral damage of a minor stroke that had left my limbs immobilized on the left side whilst in the ICU right after shifting from the OT .  A gruesome 7 hrs must have gone by before I regained consciousness and informed them about it. I was hurriedly wheeled in for an MRI which revealed a tiny clot which must have occurred when I was plugged into the heart-lung machine during the surgery. A 3% chance of freak accident I signed a disclaimer for.  With swift action from the team of cardiologists and neurolo...

GUARDIAN OF THE WOODS

The mists rolled, blurring the peaks yonder until they were only a faded outline on the dusking horizon.  The crisp autumn breeze rustled the leaves of the Sycamore and Birch trees, lulling me to sleep. I woke up with a start under twilight skies. The full moon was in all her glory bathing the woods in an ethereal silver shine. Fully alert, I listened hard to what seemed like muffled sounds of distress. Up on my feet in a jiffy, I raced along with lightning speed in the direction of the unusual sounds which weren't heard in these serene woods for ages. There he was, with a menacing look, pinning a hapless young girl on the ground, choking her to death. It was clearly a losing battle with her strength failing her. His eyes widened and he let go of her as he heard my sinister growls. My eyes glowed like embers in the darkness.  On this night, I was sinewy and thrice my normal size, with jaws that could rip pounds of human flesh with one crunch.  He met his end in this manne...
