When mid winter is bleaker and the nights are colder
The flames in my fireplace burn like a forgotten summer
The windows frost over and the chill is harsher
Howling through the night is silence and the moon shines brighter
Tannenbaum adorned with trinkets and candy canes of peppermint
Fringing the hardwood floor are unopened boxes and gifts unsent
I fill a jar with moonbeams in fond reminiscing and memories true
Lighting lavender perfumed candles, one for me, some for all of you
Bedecked Christmases and thanksgiving had graced these halls
Tinkling laughter of yesteryears now echoes off the walls
Dreams were strung on fairy lights, gauzy tassel and tinsel
Red stockings and cookies for Santa had adorned the mantel
Snow angels embossed the silver sod and snowmen stood sentinel in hats and jacquards
Toboggans whooshed in the crisp rime while the skies were dotted with geese and mallards
The tiny feet scamper no more, no squeals in the attic
The cookie jars are now a memento holding sentiments fantastic
Huddling in a cozy armchair I'm an empty nester
I twirl a holly and mistletoe for every Christmas I remember…
