TO...FRO...CAN'T LET GO

               TO...FRO... CAN'T LET GO

It was that high summer day in August when I had left the classroom to stop by the water cooler.

My eyes had wandered to the school playground and the swings. I never got a chance to play, with the roughshod kids like Jerome making their way there first.

He beat everyone to it and hogged it for the entire recess. The only time I sat on it yesterday, Jerome had stormed across, his eyes throwing daggers at me.

Clutching my collar, Jerome had yanked me off. Even before I could get my bearings, I was face down, his meaty hand pushing my head into the ground and raining blows on me with the other.

Tasting blood and gritty sand in my mouth, I wished I was stronger than him to fight him back.

Raucous laughter and snide remarks from Jerome followed me as I meekly staggered away.

That lowdown worm! I wish I could squish him underfoot until his innards spread out like jelly and marmalade all over the playground! I wish that his so-called territory would be splattered with his blood!

****

Now was my chance at the swings!

Meanwhile, mid-afternoon hunger pangs were gnawing at me and I longingly looked at the school garden as I made my way towards the playground.

Lost in a reverie, I pushed open the garden gate and ventured inside where the children usually weren't allowed.

The wired fences were entwined with strawberries, blackberries and raspberries! The tangy juice and wholesome bites of the fruits refreshed me.

Corn cobs! My favorite snack!

Just as I was admiring the towering stalks, I heard hysterical screaming and another one hollering instructions. The voice was unfamiliar and malevolent.

Gunshots zinged past the metal of the swings. Clamping my ears and pursing my mouth, I urged myself to not even breathe!

The screaming didn't stop. The gunshots were manic, fired haphazardly. Terror cruised through me and I lay crouched, hidden among the creepers, vines and the patch of tall corn.

After what seemed like hours, I heard police sirens, ambulances and school parents in a mass hysteria outside the gates.

A young man in handcuffs was dragged towards one of the police cars.

Injured kids, some dead, some barely alive were being wheeled out in all urgency.

Jerome hadn't made ithis body ridden with bullets was a bloody mess!

Jerome, I didn't mean for you to have such a brutal and painful death…

Jerome…

Jerome is gone! My classmates… all gone!

Torn… mangled…

I survived…

After a while, I was found grasping my head and rocking back and forth, muttering incoherently.

*****

The swings have long since been abandoned and are a host to an overgrowth of shrubbery. The sand, leveled by the breeze and many seasons, bears no footprints of my classmates, although the leaves whisper all their names when a wayward wind rustles them…

Jerome… Mea culpa… Mea culpa…

Author's Note:

Mea Culpa comes as an expression of guilt.

PURPLE CARNIVAL

On a clear Autumn evening, I'm a whole lot differently in love with the splash of feeble purple on the dusking skies, a hybrid of Lavender laced with Heather.  It's a garden of blooms with streaks of Fuchsia and Mulberry, a medley of regalia. A pale Violet is the the vintage elegance of my timeless sundress as I twirl away to my heart's content, the cares of the world jettisoning away on the puffs of dandelions.  Plum is the zing of the freshness a wine ushers in on a barbeque evening. The seasonal blueberry ice cream bars with drizzles of Lilac are the cool respite I look forward to with a side of Grape sorbet ! Byzantine is a   powerful stance as I hold my audience captive.  An incandescent Mauve is soothing with a tone and forthcoming promises.  A lustrous Amethyst Rose Quartz dangling on my bracelet is the crystal of my choice dazzling my Crown Chakra.  Periwinkle is a   whisper of a charming desire of the heart. Iris, although dainty, exude...

A GIFT I GIVE MYSELF

Books and more books 📚! All I talk about are books and Babylou. And for good reason. One is my creative board and the piece of my heart is a wise Sounding Board. When I interact with either of them I get great eye openers and enlightenment. There's of course a story behind this with these two main star casts and in no way are disconnected at all with random mentions.  Yeah, so with all my Ring Binder Journals and the various diaries having been filled to the brim with my daily writing plus visual embellishments, they now look no less than chunky blocks--overfed and hard to shut close. Having almost run their course, it was time to get new ones to document the rest of the year.  Amazon showed me the Paperideas A5 Journals with a shipping price to Singapore that would buy me month's worth of groceries for the household! Heck, ah ?! What the...! Is it trimmed with gold and encrusted with precious gems ! Plus the aesthetic pastel colours were all SOLD OUT with only some ga...

A~Z BLOGGING CHALLENGE THEME REVEAL 2026

Still indecisive 🤔  The commitment is intimidating, yet this will be my third year of participation that makes me want it to come full circle. Third time's a charm it's said. In 2024, I posted 26 blogs from A~Z--micro fiction, long stories, short stories, poems ( oh yes!) in a motley of genres Magic Realism, Surrealism, also a Creature Horror, a Sci Fi thriller *( in dedication to David Duchovny from X-files who was a crushing heartthrob back in my ancient days haha 😆)* all which can be concised into a broader group --FANTASY ! That was my debut year in the Bloggers world and I completed the event with a flourish. **** 2025 was a year. I had to suspend the event midway through it and fly urgently back home for the major part of April. The theme then was a Mixed Bag.  Reflections, Lifestyle, Wellness and Self Care principles were the topics I touched upon with A~Z titles all in foreign languages. That was the USP of my blogging challenge last year.  A mini fantas...

FIRSTS AND SECONDS

The day began like any other August morning in Singapore but the nip in the air embraced me a bit tenderly today and I just wanted that extra dose of coziness.  August 21st ! Today marks a significant milestone in my life - the anniversary of my open heart surgery . It's a day I'll never forget, a day that gave me a second chance at life. As I look back on the past year, I'm filled with gratitude and awe at the journey I've been on. An Open Heart Surgery and a collateral damage of a minor stroke that had left my limbs immobilized on the left side whilst in the ICU right after shifting from the OT .  A gruesome 7 hrs must have gone by before I regained consciousness and informed them about it. I was hurriedly wheeled in for an MRI which revealed a tiny clot which must have occurred when I was plugged into the heart-lung machine during the surgery. A 3% chance of freak accident I signed a disclaimer for.  With swift action from the team of cardiologists and neurolo...
