FINALE             The Gift of the North Wind The morning sun over the Yun Shan Ridge always arrived with a slow, quiet patience, filtering through the thick pine needles until the mountain mist glowed like pale green silk.  Inside the Jade Shambhala Tea House, the iron kettle was just beginning to hum over the hot charcoal embers. Lin Xiu-Ying sat at the long wooden counter, her hands wrapped around a warm clay cup, listening to the stillness of the forest. Three winters ago on a night when the mountain was locked in a fierce, unyielding blizzard, the wind and the sea had their own ideas. ***** She didn't choose to board that trading merchant boat down in the southern spice ports. She was just a tiny, silver-white kitten, shivering behind a stack of cinnamon crates...

🍁🍁 AUTUMN 🍁 🍁  The Floating Lanterns of the Seventh Month The playful dramas of the morning garden had faded into a quiet, reverent dusk as the seventh lunar month arrived on Yun Shan Ridge. The air turned crisp, carrying the scent of damp pine needles and the faint, unmistakable aroma of joss paper burning in distant valley courtyards below.  It was the season of the Hungry Ghost Festival—a time when the gates of the underworld swung open, and the veil between the living and the departed thinned to a mere whisper. While the townsfolk below locked their doors early out of fear of the wandering shadows, Xiu-Ying prepared The Jade Shambhala not as a fortress, but as a quiet, respectful harbor. True to her status as a phantom to the modern world, she understood that the spirits passing through the mountain mist...

CHAPTER 5                        TYPHOON OLEA The window shutters started swinging in the light breeze at first. Xiu Ying stopped eating for a heartbeat and listened intently. Down below where the garden path led to the valley roads, the trees were speaking. The wind was more intense there as it rocked the branches and she could hear faint noises of a couple of branches cracking and falling with a thud. She dropped her chopsticks and called out to Moon Glow in a panic.  "Sim bu bu! Moonie Boo! Where are you, paopei! Come to mama quick. Here girl...tch tch tch". She rattled her snack tin to get her attention even as her heart was beating outside of her chest.  Oh that idiot! where is she! Xiu was perspiring and a cold sweat ran down behind her neck.  MOON GLOW!  Out crawled a sleepy kitten from under the c...

Welcome to The Jade Shambhala Tea House!                       CHAPTER 4  MEKCHA ( PEAR-BARLEY TISANE) Stretching out regally on the cat bed, Moon Glow let out a content moan as she yawned herself awake. There was no raindrop pattern on the window pane beside her, but the glass shone a mellow honeyed hue. The sun was out! She couldn't wait to romp outside in the backyard which smelled heavenly with the herbs Xiu had home grown for her blended teas. Xiu even had a small patch of Catnip for her to romp in. The front yard was a better temptation today though. The squirrels were chittering playfully on the magnolia branch that nearly brushed the window. Moon Glow loved waking...

Right in the middle of the Spring Equinox, the rigid spine of the winter chill finally breaks, replaced by a tart apple blossom aroma and streaks of sunbeams lancing through the budding Magnolia tree in the centre of the garden.  The slopes of the mountain are alive with the pale pink of wild peach blos...

Welcome to the tea house!                             CHAPTER 2                      LUNAR NEW YEAR          Kim-huan Tê ( Golden Lily Oolong) The early spring air hanging over Sian-Phô village was heavy, smelling faintly of spent sulfur from the Lunar New Year firecrackers and the cold, sharp scent of wet pine needles.  Up on the Yun-Shan Ridge, the festive red lanterns hanging from the eaves of the low wooden cottages were damp and water-logged, their brilliant scarlet dye bleeding slowly into the persistent gray mountain mist. The holiday had just ended, and while the rest of the village was settling into the quiet hope of a new agricultural...
