INÉZ ARTIFACTS ( DAY 25, LETTER I)

                        CHAPTER 25

                      INÉZ ARTIFACTS

Mayhem tore all through the Xaringmere Cragg Rise camp that was roused from deep sleep. Fires were snuffed. Tents were torn down. The sky had ripped open and shown its allegiance to the law. The constellation Uri Celeste hailed its crest across the cloudless moonshine.

A slick moon ray speared straight through the leaves in a single icy blue shaft and struck the glade. The world was painted  silver-blue even as the air tasted like fresh frost.

“It isn't cup,” Goldwynn whispered. Her breath, fogging. “It’s a time keeper of the skies.”

The Locke Jewel was a perfect moonstone disc, palm-wide, no thicker than a thumb. A flawless otherworldly crystal, cold to the eye, warm to the touch. Its edge had caught the lantern light and had thrown it back in dancing rainbow colored arcs.

Hundreds of sculpted facets hummed beneath the surface, turning the Jewel into a star field. The glow was steady, the color of moonlight through falling snow.

Deep in its core, a jade laurel wreath was frozen in mid sway, the very wind preserved in the Jewel's heart. Each leaf was distinct, carved from a green gem so dark it was almost black, outlined with hairline gold filigree at the veins.

Suddenly, the wreath stirred and Goldwynn’s breath caught. The Jewel burned warm against her palms, and for one wild second she forgot how to exhale. Her eyes were glassy with disbelief. “It’s real,” she whispered, then louder, like she had to hear it to believe it.

Dapper went still. Then he whooped — a raw, ragged sound that cracked the silver hush. He bounced on his heels, claws raking the air like he could catch the moment.

Papa Koala pressed a paw to his chest, eyes shut tight. When he opened them, they were wet. He just nodded at Goldwynn, once. A benediction. A gratitude too big for words.

Chipper wordlessly just dropped to one knee, head bowed, fist over his heart. A knight’s salute to the thing they’d bled for. To the girl who’d found it.

Even the Apple Tree seemed to lean in, roots creaking, thanking the Knights for their brilliance in solving the cipher. They did it!

*****

A horrendous bellowing from the south made their blood run cold. The Beast reigning over the valhalla of Xaringmere Cragg Rise was on hot coals! It was a heralding a war with its battle cry of the ages!

Meanwhile, the Locke Jewel had a mind of its own. Without losing a moment it surrendered itself into the slot with a distinct hum.

The moment it touched the seventh hollow, the knoll buckled like a heart shocked back to life. The apple tree arched and in a split second, the bark of the trunk parted and a doorway breathed inwards where the trunk of the tree had been.

Cold.

Vast.

Smelling of gemstones and stardust.

The cleverly camouflaged, dimly lit tree vault was a labyrinth that seemed endless inside the hollow of the apple tree. Corridors of old  roots spiraled down, down, even further down on the terraced catacombs. The air was a reverence. The kind that comes before a just verdict.

Goldwynn’s lantern flickered, still full of life, casting dancing shadows on the gnarled walls as she pushed aside the cobwebs.

And there, floating in an incandescent pool, cradled by nothing and everything, pulsed the artifact they’d bled for to the end.

The Starwood Crystal....!

It didn’t glow. It lit up the labyrinth like a second full moon underground.

A delicate lattice of a crystal septagon snowflake yet it seemed to contain layers of prisms. Auroras swirled within its facets, caught in a filigreed cage.

Chipper leaned in, his breath misting the crystal's surface.

Dapper’s eyes gleamed with a mix of awe and fear. "They say it holds the threads of time itself. Touch it, and you'll unravel the fabric of what's yet unseen."

The buzzing was urgent and mournful, as if the crystal was in sync with the very heartbeat of Mistwood. Goldwynn felt a shiver run down her spine. This was the power the Boar sought – to rewrite pivotal moments, to sculpt the future to their evil designs of their reign.

Chipper's eyes darted to the crystal, then back to Goldwynn, his expression twisted in a mix of fascination and warning. "If they get it, the whole world could collapse like a house of cards."

The auroras within the crystal seemed to writhe, as if alive. Goldwynn's resolve hardened. They wouldn't let the Mighty Boar wield this power.

The Starwood Crystal with its sacredness,  would stay locked, its secrets safe, and the timeline intact.

The voices inside the crystal swelled, then faded to a gentle hum, as if sensing Goldwynn's decision.

The lantern light pulsed in rhythm. A quiet ticking to the countdown....10...9...8...7...hasten please the crystal seemed to hiss.

Goldwynn stole a melancholic glance at Papa Koala and his comforting nod were overlayed with

6...5...4...make it count...

it thrummed and bounced off the ribbed walls of the catacomb.

And then, the call was made. It wasn't a decision. It was prophesized. A part remaining to be played out. The most crucial...

A gentle paw was laid on Goldwynn's wrist. The inevitable moment that she dreaded was here. She willed herself to look into those gallant eyes. Of a cherished member of her Knights cavalry...

And then she broke down. The others looked on---puzzled...

ANAM CARA

The waves are soft and frothy. Laced with gossamer frills tenderly kissing the tips of my toes covered with the grainy sand of the rugged seashore where I'm sitting, wistful. A gust of briny breeze tousles my hair as I gaze as far as my eyes can see.  A flock of terns wheel overhead, their sharp, shrill cries punctuating the air as they dive and swoop over the surfs. A lone frigate bird , its crimson belly dazzling like a jewel skims majestically above, its long, slender wings outstretched as it rides the thermals high above the ocean. I absorb the sights and sounds of the late afternoon while absentmindedly scooping seashells beside me. As the afternoon phases, the furthest rim of the ocean is fringed in a gilded hem and the sleepy sun yawns, its dipping glow streaking the sky in a mellow tangerine and warm cherry. As I continue sitting there, the ships and yachts appear --specks of light from the portholes glimmering in the distance, reminding me of the phrase “That ship has sai...

INSIDIOUS

The car juddered to a halt and refused to budge an inch forward. "Luke, I thought we had a full gas tank and the car was serviced just this weekend…what's wrong?" "I have no idea, Stella…We're in the middle of nowhere and my phone has no signal! But look there. It says 'Baby Museum' on the signpost. Shall we go in and see if they have a landline to get us out of this mess?" "Guess we have no choice. But I'm very uneasy, Luke. I just want to go home and rest. Our baby's due in a couple of weeks." "I'm so sorry, honey. But look at the brighter side. We can check out this place in advance." At the entrance were standees of Tinkerbell and Peter Pan. The lobby glowed with pastel pink shimmering lights. Mannequins of fairies lined the walls. Luke approached the front desk.  "Yes sir, we will have it arranged. Meanwhile, why don't the both of you take a tour of our museum?" Stella took Luke's arm and hobbl...

QUEST FOR THE BEARS (DAY 18, LETTER Q)

CHAPTER 17             QUEST FOR THE BEARS  The next day, the pigs trotted off to spread mischief in the woodland, their ricky-ticky steps scuffing the damp path into a mess of overturned leaves and broken twigs. Goldwynn stayed crouched behind the wonky rain barrel until the sound of their pig-trouble thinned, then thinned again, then dissolved into the larger quiet of the trees. She didn’t move right away. The woods had a way of listening after the pigs left, as if it wasn’t sure they were truly gone. The air held its breath with her. When she finally stood, the silence felt heavier than noise. No birds called. The light came down in broken pieces, the sun playing hide-and-seek through beech and alder, dappling the forest floor with spools of pale gold. The ground under her boots was soft and cold, a black earth that smelled of truffles gone to rot and old rain. It stuck to ...

THE BIG BAD WOLF( DAY 17, LETTER T)

CHAPTER 16                    THE BIG BAD WOLF  The pigs snarled like proper rascals, fixing their cold steely eyes on the Wolf's cottage. How dare he refuse to part with his cottage! When the pigs demand, it's given to them---no questions asked! Porkinn limped, Baconne was soggy, Swinedell rubbed a sore bump on his head, but they were far from defeated. Swinedell snorted, a crooked grin spreading across his face. "Wolf thinks 'e's posh, don't 'e? " Baconne sniffed the air, his nostrils flaring. "We want the cottage!” He growled. Porkinn cracked his fingers, his sly glance darting about.  The pigs crept towards the back door, their footsteps silent on the soft grass. They spotted the Wolf through the kitchen window, stirring a pot of steaming stew for dinner. They kicked the door in, the wood splintering jaggedly. The latch gave in....

HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

The sleek steel grey landline with it's cordless handset gleams in the mid morning sunlight. It's only a fixture on the tabletop these past several years yet loved and flaunted for old times sake. Also, for the numerous times the handset had nestled in our palms. The vintage feel of it and the stronghold of memories I associate it with beats the smartphone by miles.  It has in turn been a confidante of our precious moments, some idling talk, some annoyance oh yes ! and all before Whatsapp made an entry into our lives and the poor dear was no longer in demand. The world was at our fingertips. It doesn't complain, doesn't whimper, not even a sigh, murmur or a slightest hint at a whisper of life for the past decade and more! Except… On Thursday the daylights were socked out of me! Lost in mundane chores, I had my gloved hands deep in a pile of soapy water scrubbing away at the breakfast dishes. The usual swell of silence was harshly rend by the landline from the livin...
