FIERY FRACAS ( DAY 14, LETTER F)

                           CHAPTER 13

                         FIERY FRACAS

The brawl raged – fur flying, wood creaking, critters yelling. The pigs were outnumbered, but they weren't going down without a fight. Swinedell smashed a wooden chair, sending splinters flying. Porkinn kicked Chipper, sending him tumbling. Dapper somersaulted off a shelf, landing a series of rapid-fire nips on his scalp.

Goldwynn yanked Baconne's tail, spinning him into a bookshelf. Hopper grabbed Porrkinn holding him in a tight rabbit grip. "Yield, porkchop!" he growled.

Porrkinn grunted, his eyes glinting with malice as he cracked his knuckles, the sound echoing through like a threat. His porcine features twisted into a cruel grin, flashing a missing tooth, a souvenir from a previous brawl.

"You see, girl, we run things here," he drawled, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Like these pets." He snapped his fingers at the Chipper, Hopper, and Dapper, as they trembled in unison.

Swinedell lunged, grabbing the Chipmunk by the scruff, its tiny paws kicking wildly as it squeaked in terror.  Chipper's fluffy tail quivered with fear, and its eyes rolled wildly, searching for an escape. Swinedell’s grubby fingers dug deeper, making him whimper.

Baconne pinned Hopper to the floor, its ashen grey fur flattened beneath his meaty hands. "Hah! Gotcha, fluffball!" He chortled, his laughter bouncing through the den.

Dapper, sensing danger, folded itself into a ball, its eyes squeezed shut, tiny chest heaving with fear.

Goldwynn tensed, her eyes flashing with anger. "Hey! Let 'em go!" she growled, her fists clenched at her sides.

Porkinn laughed, a cold, mirthless sound, as he circled her. "Or what? You wanna play?" he taunted, his grin parading across his face "You're no match for the Three Little Pigs, girl!"

Goldwynn dodged his swinging fist, her hair flying as she countered with a swift kick to his gut. Dapper somersaulted off a shelf, landing with a soft thud on Baconne 's shoulders, his tiny claws digging in. Baconne howled, bucking like a bronco, but the squirrel hung on wildly mauling him.

Chipper darted between Porkinn 's legs, tripping him up. The young pig tumbled, his mohawk askew, as Hopper pinned him with a knee. "Gotcha!" the rabbit growled, his ears twitching.

Porkinn stumbled back, his eyes watering from Dapper's flurry of nips. Goldwyn seized the moment, grabbing a nearby wooden spoon and wielding it like a sword.

The cottage trembled with the force of the brawl.

Baconne charged, his massive frame hurtling towards Goldwynn. She sidestepped, tripping him with a sweep of her leg. The big pig crashed into a bookshelf, sending heavy tomes tumbling.

Porkinn squirmed free from Hopper's grip, his face twisted in a snarl. He lunged at Chipper, but Dapper intercepted him, their paws flying in a whirlwind of fur and claws.

Hopper, cornered and frightened, bit down hard on Baconne’s leg, its teeth sinking into flesh. Baconne yowled in pain, releasing the bunny as it thumped its hind leg in distress.

Chipper, not to be outdone, scratched Swinedell's face, its claws leaving deep gnarls in their wake. Swinedell howled, releasing the Chipper who flew across the room, landing with a soft thud against a cookie jar, sending it whipping and the contents crashing to the floor.

Dapper, sensing an opportunity, uncurled, its eyes fixed on Porkinn. With a tiny squeak, it launched itself at the pig’s face, its claws jabbing wildly.

Porrkinn caught off guard, stumbled backward, momentarily blinded by the flurry of fur and claws. Goldwynn saw her chance and lunged, her fists flying as she aimed for the pigs. But they were too strong, too many. They swatted her down, pinning her to the floor.

ANAM CARA

The waves are soft and frothy. Laced with gossamer frills tenderly kissing the tips of my toes covered with the grainy sand of the rugged seashore where I'm sitting, wistful. A gust of briny breeze tousles my hair as I gaze as far as my eyes can see.  A flock of terns wheel overhead, their sharp, shrill cries punctuating the air as they dive and swoop over the surfs. A lone frigate bird , its crimson belly dazzling like a jewel skims majestically above, its long, slender wings outstretched as it rides the thermals high above the ocean. I absorb the sights and sounds of the late afternoon while absentmindedly scooping seashells beside me. As the afternoon phases, the furthest rim of the ocean is fringed in a gilded hem and the sleepy sun yawns, its dipping glow streaking the sky in a mellow tangerine and warm cherry. As I continue sitting there, the ships and yachts appear --specks of light from the portholes glimmering in the distance, reminding me of the phrase “That ship has sai...

ARIEL AND BLUE-BLOOD SHOES

The waves crashed violently against the craggy mountainside and the moonlight shone on the lacy froths. As I waded through the water and stepped on the wet sand, I remembered another night which was many moons ago. The same glinting lights through the palace doorways and windows, the fireworks adorning the night sky like shooting stars and meteors. A royal celebration with all the works and the guests dressed up in their best finery and aristocratic jewelry. Of noble births they all were. Blue blooded as the matriarch had pointedly told me once.  That unholy night! That night of icy hearts and howling laughter, the echoes of cackling that followed me till I ran on wobbly legs to find my place of comfort where the land met water… Hot tears streaming down, I regretted those days when I lost my heart to a man so spineless. Had I not dragged him to the shore, he would have been a mangled mass after being torn apart by the piranhas and other monstrous maws.  How I regret…Oh!...

HILANG

Chapter 2                Muay, the Maddening Scamp Seasons had gone by with vibrant autumns and chilling winters. Muay Thai had now  become very outgoing and social. On a full moon night, this newly transformed scamp  had bounded away on some nocturnal adventure.  I waited for her return for almost a week. As I searched high and low for Muay Thai, my heart raced with panic with every passing moment.  On one of my search treks, I spotted something that made my blood run cold. Lying on the ground, partially hidden by the underbrush on the curbside, was Muay Thai's collar. The vibrant fuchsia leather was faded and dirty, but the delicate zircon pendant still sparkled in the sunlight and that had caught my attention. Holding it gently in my hands, I examined it for any sign of what might have happened to Muay Thai. But there was nothing - no blood, dried or otherwise. Maybe, just maybe, Muay Thai was still out there, wait...

HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE

The sleek steel grey landline with it's cordless handset gleams in the mid morning sunlight. It's only a fixture on the tabletop these past several years yet loved and flaunted for old times sake. Also, for the numerous times the handset had nestled in our palms. The vintage feel of it and the stronghold of memories I associate it with beats the smartphone by miles.  It has in turn been a confidante of our precious moments, some idling talk, some annoyance oh yes ! and all before Whatsapp made an entry into our lives and the poor dear was no longer in demand. The world was at our fingertips. It doesn't complain, doesn't whimper, not even a sigh, murmur or a slightest hint at a whisper of life for the past decade and more! Except… On Thursday the daylights were socked out of me! Lost in mundane chores, I had my gloved hands deep in a pile of soapy water scrubbing away at the breakfast dishes. The usual swell of silence was harshly rend by the landline from the livin...

BOKETTO

In my quiet moments, I pause the world from its frantic pace. In that stillness, I wistfully gaze into the distance and just let things unfurl as they please. I let my thoughts flow, absorbing nothing. Internalizing nothing. And just like that, the strands of tightly woven twine untangle and the knots come loose. Today, as usual, I found myself caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily grind. I was rushing to get things done, stressing about deadlines, and feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of tasks on my to-do list. But then, I took a deliberate pause. With a deep breath, I stretched, stepped away from my desk, and walked out onto my balcony. Leaning on the railing, I looked down at the familiar lanes of my neighborhood, twirling around the corners behind the blocks of apartments.  The park and playground stood deserted at noon amid the cluster of flowering trees and surrounded by the hedges lining the curbs. I gazed at the sky, feeling the warm sun on my face and ...
