ABERCROMBIE LOCKE MANSION

This post is part of the Blogchatter A2Z Challenge 2026.

                        CHAPTER 1

The sky bled bruises of plum and cherry over the rolling hills. A full moon hung low against the mauve casting silver shards through the trees. The mansion made of cold greystone loomed large beyond the rusted iron gates.

It grated on the gravel, rasping on the hinges and yawned open like a predator's jaw as Goldwynn booted it open with her foot. Her sneakers squished heavily on the mulch of dead leaves. Clutching her backpack, she looked up at the towering, grim structure forebodingly.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" her friend Lexi whispered, hesitating by the gate. "This mansion's totally cursed, they say." Lexi's voice was a thin thread. A chill crept up her back and she tightened her hold on Goldwynn 's sleeve.

Goldwynn smirked, her eyes sparkling as she tugged free from Lexi’s hold. "Cursed or not, I'm going to snatch the Locke Jewel. Meet me back here, midnight sharp.”

"What if the rumors are true?", Lexi chattered through her teeth. "They say whoever takes the Jewel gets...consumed."

Goldwynn snorted, swinging her backpack. "Consumed by what? Fiddlesticks! I'm going in there. You can wait for me here…or leave. Up to you."

The enormous courtyard engulfed her as she crept through the overgrown shrubs and tall stalks of grass in the neglected gardens. A strong wind whipped about her face, her chestnut-blond hair stinging her flushed cheeks.

The door to the mansion was boarded but Goldwynn sneaked around the side and found a window that could be wrested open. Her slender frame squeezed itself through the cramped opening. She found herself in what was once a sun room.

Inside, the shadows tangled with the bright moonlight sneaking through the grimy window panes. Cobwebs clung their skeletal fingers onto antique vases and furniture. Dust motes danced in the moonbeams and air reeked of decay.

Goldwynn's sneakers screeched again and a floorboard groaned in reply. She froze to the spot.

"..someone there?" A distant creak answered her. The wind howled, slamming an open window on the storey above.

She bolted for the grand staircase, her heart drumming incessantly. Shelves lined one side of the wall on the wide landing on which stood rows of dusty trophies, medals and framed photographs of a family long gone.

Where was the Jewel?

A swarm of bats roused by the running feet rushed past Goldwynn in a frenzy, their wings swatting at her face. Shrieking, Goldwynn sprinted blindly into the maw of the mansion.

The dancing shadows closed in on her as she leaned against the door, panting.

She'd run into a dead-end. As her heartbeats slowed, the floorboards suddenly surrendered, and she plunged into a pitch-black void.

The air was a solid wall, choking her. Goldwynn hurtled through emptiness, flailing for a handhold that wasn't there. Darkness swallowed her whole.

Bracing herself for a horrendous impact on hard concrete or even worse –a bed of crags and pointy rocks, she wished this was only a nightmare. Or a quick end. This is it !

I shouldn't have come here. I should have listened to Lexi. I only hope my death is instant.

Suddenly, the air thinned and cooled. A dim cavern materialized. I died.

Goldwynn floated, wingless but weightless. Instead of a barrelling free fall, her landing was soft. She slid down a sloping ramp, and rolled clumsily out of the cavern into a warm, pale peach gloaming.

To Be Continued....

PURPLE CARNIVAL

On a clear Autumn evening, I'm a whole lot differently in love with the splash of feeble purple on the dusking skies, a hybrid of Lavender laced with Heather.  It's a garden of blooms with streaks of Fuchsia and Mulberry, a medley of regalia. A pale Violet is the the vintage elegance of my timeless sundress as I twirl away to my heart's content, the cares of the world jettisoning away on the puffs of dandelions.  Plum is the zing of the freshness a wine ushers in on a barbeque evening. The seasonal blueberry ice cream bars with drizzles of Lilac are the cool respite I look forward to with a side of Grape sorbet ! Byzantine is a   powerful stance as I hold my audience captive.  An incandescent Mauve is soothing with a tone and forthcoming promises.  A lustrous Amethyst Rose Quartz dangling on my bracelet is the crystal of my choice dazzling my Crown Chakra.  Periwinkle is a   whisper of a charming desire of the heart. Iris, although dainty, exude...

THEME REVEAL A~Z BLOGGING CHALLENGE THEME REVEAL 2026

Still indecisive 🤔  The commitment is intimidating, yet this will be my third year of participation that makes me want it to come full circle. Third time's a charm it's said. In 2024, I posted 26 blogs from A~Z--micro fiction, long stories, short stories, poems ( oh yes!) in a motley of genres Magic Realism, Surrealism, also a Creature Horror, a Sci Fi thriller *( in dedication to David Duchovny from X-files who was a crushing heartthrob back in my ancient days haha 😆)* all which can be concised into a broader group --FANTASY ! That was my debut year in the Bloggers world and I completed the event with a flourish. **** 2025 was a year. I had to suspend the event midway through it and fly urgently back home for the major part of April. The theme then was a Mixed Bag.  Reflections, Lifestyle, Wellness and Self Care principles were the topics I touched upon with A~Z titles all in foreign languages. That was the USP of my blogging challenge last year.  A mini fantas...

HILANG

Chapter 2                Muay, the Maddening Scamp Seasons had gone by with vibrant autumns and chilling winters. Muay Thai had now  become very outgoing and social. On a full moon night, this newly transformed scamp  had bounded away on some nocturnal adventure.  I waited for her return for almost a week. As I searched high and low for Muay Thai, my heart raced with panic with every passing moment.  On one of my search treks, I spotted something that made my blood run cold. Lying on the ground, partially hidden by the underbrush on the curbside, was Muay Thai's collar. The vibrant fuchsia leather was faded and dirty, but the delicate zircon pendant still sparkled in the sunlight and that had caught my attention. Holding it gently in my hands, I examined it for any sign of what might have happened to Muay Thai. But there was nothing - no blood, dried or otherwise. Maybe, just maybe, Muay Thai was still out there, wait...

ANAM CARA

The waves are soft and frothy. Laced with gossamer frills tenderly kissing the tips of my toes covered with the grainy sand of the rugged seashore where I'm sitting, wistful. A gust of briny breeze tousles my hair as I gaze as far as my eyes can see.  A flock of terns wheel overhead, their sharp, shrill cries punctuating the air as they dive and swoop over the surfs. A lone frigate bird , its crimson belly dazzling like a jewel skims majestically above, its long, slender wings outstretched as it rides the thermals high above the ocean. I absorb the sights and sounds of the late afternoon while absentmindedly scooping seashells beside me. As the afternoon phases, the furthest rim of the ocean is fringed in a gilded hem and the sleepy sun yawns, its dipping glow streaking the sky in a mellow tangerine and warm cherry. As I continue sitting there, the ships and yachts appear --specks of light from the portholes glimmering in the distance, reminding me of the phrase “That ship has sai...

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL

Browsing through a quaint market on the streets of Aramza , Veron stopped at stall which sold souvenirs at discounted prices. An oval shaped mirror with a gem studded edging caught her eye. The vendor told her those were only imitation stones and not real gems. He sold it to her at a throwaway price. With a glint in his eyes, he counted the money and flashed her a wide toothed smile.  Back home after a weary journey by air, she unpacked her belongings and hung the exotic mirror in the hallway. The next evening, as she went to switch on the lights in the foyer, she noticed something strange. The glass had clouded over! Unable to understand what was going on, she rubbed it with her sleeve. Nothing! The fogging seemed to get denser. The weather was clear and there was no way a mirror in the hallway could get steamed over. Panic rose inside her when she realized that a mist was swirling inside the mirror! She clamped her palms to her mouth when a faint writing appeared on the glass. “D...
