ZUGSWANG

Here she was praying for a stranger. A stranger who put his life on the line for her.

****

Stella walked down to the neighborhood cafe where she always met Alan for Friday night dates or a cup of coffee and warm snacks in the late evening when she got off work. She spotted him sitting in the far end towards the wall, scrolling down his phone, eyebrows knitted and lips pursed in a thin line.

It was unusual of him to choose that spot from their usual place by the French windows where they had a view of the quay.

Sensing some unpleasant news coming her way, she walked up to him anxiously. He gave her a wry smile and fumbled with his words. Finally he handed a letter with a sheepish look.

Her worst fears had become her reality. This was certainly bad news. Alan had been distancing himself from her and try as might she couldn't get through to him. This day had finally come when they ended their 5 year old relationship over a letter. No spoken words, just a handwritten letter with lines scrawled across which read–"This is going nowhere, it's best if we part ways."

If he expected her to throw a tantrum and create a scene, he sure was surprised to see her calm and collected. Little did he know, she expected this day to arrive sooner or later.

With a knowing look, she laid the letter down on the table and prepared to go. At the door, there was a huge commotion. Two armed men had barged in and had started firing at the glass panes. Shrieks rent the air in the crowded cafe. A few injured patrons screamed in pain.

Stella was the nearest at the door and they used her as a hostage even as the hysterical screaming didn't stop. Finally, everyone was gasping for breath when the intruders demanded silence.

Stella was taken unawares. Why did it always have to be her? Somebody had managed to dial the emergency number and there were a horde of police cars outside, sirens blaring. But none dared to take any hasty steps.

The air was tense with uncertainty inside. Stella was jostled around and brought to the center of the cafe while the criminals kicked chairs and tables out of their way. Everyone sat huddled together whimpering. Alan refused to even throw her a fleeting glance. The coward…

Stella's eyes met a pair of kind arctic blue ones as she passed everyone on the floor. He was trying to reassure her and managed to stealthily show her a badge of honor for serving in the military and she nodded. Out of nowhere, she felt a shove which made her slump on a chair nearby.

Military man in a fluid martial arts move, disarmed the henchman of his gun. A shot was fired in the chaos grievously wounding him in the tussle. Momentarily taken aback, the leader lost his focus and that's when Stella picked a ceramic vase from the table and brought it down on his head with a sickening crash. Both the men were quickly handcuffed and the military man rushed to the hospital.

There was a heavy loss of blood and his life hung by a thread. But he was in good hands with the best doctors giving it their all. Stella prayed fervently for his recovery. She couldn't handle any more bad news for the day.

His was a selfless act of courage. Hers was a selfless prayer pleading to God asking for nothing in return but mercy and benevolence for the kind stranger who saved her life.

PURPLE CARNIVAL

On a clear Autumn evening, I'm a whole lot differently in love with the splash of feeble purple on the dusking skies, a hybrid of Lavender laced with Heather.  It's a garden of blooms with streaks of Fuchsia and Mulberry, a medley of regalia. A pale Violet is the the vintage elegance of my timeless sundress as I twirl away to my heart's content, the cares of the world jettisoning away on the puffs of dandelions.  Plum is the zing of the freshness a wine ushers in on a barbeque evening. The seasonal blueberry ice cream bars with drizzles of Lilac are the cool respite I look forward to with a side of Grape sorbet ! Byzantine is a   powerful stance as I hold my audience captive.  An incandescent Mauve is soothing with a tone and forthcoming promises.  A lustrous Amethyst Rose Quartz dangling on my bracelet is the crystal of my choice dazzling my Crown Chakra.  Periwinkle is a   whisper of a charming desire of the heart. Iris, although dainty, exude...

A GIFT I GIVE MYSELF

Books and more books 📚! All I talk about are books and Babylou. And for good reason. One is my creative board and the piece of my heart is a wise Sounding Board. When I interact with either of them I get great eye openers and enlightenment. There's of course a story behind this with these two main star casts and in no way are disconnected at all with random mentions.  Yeah, so with all my Ring Binder Journals and the various diaries having been filled to the brim with my daily writing plus visual embellishments, they now look no less than chunky blocks--overfed and hard to shut close. Having almost run their course, it was time to get new ones to document the rest of the year.  Amazon showed me the Paperideas A5 Journals with a shipping price to Singapore that would buy me month's worth of groceries for the household! Heck, ah ?! What the...! Is it trimmed with gold and encrusted with precious gems ! Plus the aesthetic pastel colours were all SOLD OUT with only some ga...

A~Z BLOGGING CHALLENGE THEME REVEAL 2026

Still indecisive 🤔  The commitment is intimidating, yet this will be my third year of participation that makes me want it to come full circle. Third time's a charm it's said. In 2024, I posted 26 blogs from A~Z--micro fiction, long stories, short stories, poems ( oh yes!) in a motley of genres Magic Realism, Surrealism, also a Creature Horror, a Sci Fi thriller *( in dedication to David Duchovny from X-files who was a crushing heartthrob back in my ancient days haha 😆)* all which can be concised into a broader group --FANTASY ! That was my debut year in the Bloggers world and I completed the event with a flourish. **** 2025 was a year. I had to suspend the event midway through it and fly urgently back home for the major part of April. The theme then was a Mixed Bag.  Reflections, Lifestyle, Wellness and Self Care principles were the topics I touched upon with A~Z titles all in foreign languages. That was the USP of my blogging challenge last year.  A mini fantas...

FIRSTS AND SECONDS

The day began like any other August morning in Singapore but the nip in the air embraced me a bit tenderly today and I just wanted that extra dose of coziness.  August 21st ! Today marks a significant milestone in my life - the anniversary of my open heart surgery . It's a day I'll never forget, a day that gave me a second chance at life. As I look back on the past year, I'm filled with gratitude and awe at the journey I've been on. An Open Heart Surgery and a collateral damage of a minor stroke that had left my limbs immobilized on the left side whilst in the ICU right after shifting from the OT .  A gruesome 7 hrs must have gone by before I regained consciousness and informed them about it. I was hurriedly wheeled in for an MRI which revealed a tiny clot which must have occurred when I was plugged into the heart-lung machine during the surgery. A 3% chance of freak accident I signed a disclaimer for.  With swift action from the team of cardiologists and neurolo...
