MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL

Browsing through a quaint market on the streets of Aramza, Veron stopped at stall which sold souvenirs at discounted prices. An oval shaped mirror with a gem studded edging caught her eye. The vendor told her those were only imitation stones and not real gems. He sold it to her at a throwaway price. With a glint in his eyes, he counted the money and flashed her a wide toothed smile.

Back home after a weary journey by air, she unpacked her belongings and hung the exotic mirror in the hallway. The next evening, as she went to switch on the lights in the foyer, she noticed something strange. The glass had clouded over!

Unable to understand what was going on, she rubbed it with her sleeve. Nothing! The fogging seemed to get denser. The weather was clear and there was no way a mirror in the hallway could get steamed over. Panic rose inside her when she realized that a mist was swirling inside the mirror!

She clamped her palms to her mouth when a faint writing appeared on the glass. “Don't open the front door”. As she stood rooted to the spot stunned at the strange occurrence, the mirror crack'd slightly near the edge with a soft chink.

Veron jumped back with a shriek. The writing slowly faded and the glass cleared in a trice. Veron didn't know what to make of it, neither did the message hold any significance. Veron tried to slip it out of the wall hook but pulled her hand back as if electrified. The mirror seemed to be possessed.

With her heart racing, she slowly retreated and rushed to the bedroom, out of breath. This apartment building was in a quiet area and most of the flats on her floor were not occupied. She didn't know what to do when suddenly the doorbell made her jump out of her skin.

She wasn't expecting anyone, yet she crossed the foyer again, hesitantly this time. The mirror seemed to glare at her and like a rage building up inside it, the fog swelled furiously this time. Another chink appeared with a slightly louder crack this time. The message was more pronounced as if pleading in urgency–”Don't open…”

The rest of the sentence trailed off as if the mirror had used up every ounce of its energy. Veron nodded and ignored the repeated ringing of the doorbell.

The lights fizzled out and the foyer was shrouded in darkness. Clueless, she stood still, not daring to breathe. The edges of the mirror buzzed comfortingly.

The sound of the retreating footsteps faded, but the mirror didn't stop buzzing. It seemed to signal her not to move yet.

A good fifteen minutes passed when the lights turned on and the mirror glowed softly. The glass was clear and she looked at her reflection, panic stricken and perspiring.

At a loss of what to do, she looked at the strange mirror and wondered about the message. She got her answers the next morning when the breaking news screamed from the television that a serial killer was apprehended with his serrated dagger on the way out from Luxe Apartment. Veron hadn't watched the news ever since her arrival two days back.

Breaking into cold sweat, the possibility of the killer standing outside her door last evening, the mirror predicting this, warning her not to open the door all made sense now.

Tears streaming down her face, she rushed to the foyer and leaned against the cold glass, thanking the mirror profusely.

Running her fingers along the cracks she soothed it. It seemed to come alive last night like her knight in shining armor.

The glass shone crystal clear and the gemstones twinkled on the bright summer day.

  1. Oh, this was good. Makes me wonder who was sending her the message through the mirror, though. A ghost...someone who really wants to be her knight in shining armor? ;)

  2. OH! I love a good creepy mirror story! This time thought the mirror was the protector and not the source of the horror.

WHEN THE SHARDS SING, the BEAST AWAKENS( DAY 22, LETTER W)

CHAPTER 21  WHEN THE SHARDS SING, the BEAST                                   AWAKENS  Dawn was hours away, but nobody at Meadow Brook Cottage was sleeping.   The stew was gone. The bread was devoured. The porridge pot was polished clean. The berry tart for dessert existed only as stains on Dapper’s snout. Tasha slept by the hearth, her milk cup clutched to her like a shield. The Knights Army sat around the scarred oak table, full-bellied and hollow-eyed, because Papa Koala’s words were still heavy in the air. As they pored over the map, Tasha roused from her sleep and knocked over her milk cup. Her milk cup rolled across the floorboards, hit the table and stopped dead against the oaken leg directly under the crystal apple. Both the objects buzzed in sync. Tasha whimpered in her sleep and t...

JOURNEY MOST TREACHEROUS ( DAY 23, LETTER J)

CHAPTER 22           JOURNEY MOST TREACHEROUS  The plan was set. With a departure set before daybreak they would easily avoid the pig patrols, reaching Mistwood Shadow Glade before the Mighty Boar knew their agenda.  As they filed out to grab minimal winks of sleep that wouldn’t come, the crystal apple sat alone in the dark, throwing tiny red constellations across the ceiling in the library. Watching. Waiting. They packed ammo for the battle of the ages.  "Mistwood Shadow Glade is three days away. Day one: Cross the dell before twilight or the pig scouts sniff out your wake.  Day Two: Skirt around the Bone Fields. Better still, avoid it altogether! We take shortcuts through low lying rivers. Water hides our scent. Day three: Reach the fringes of the Mistwood Shadow Glade. Keep the shards from getting activated along the way. No fires after dusk. ...

CHAPTER 23                  GATES TO THE VAULT  Three days of trudging, trekking and aching muscles later, the cozy, sunlit, honeyed woods of Bramble Shire were miles behind them.  At the edge of the deep, fog covered forest, a wispy figure appeared before them –The Guardian Maiden, Blaire barricading their way. "What do you seek in Mistwood Shadow Glade?" Her voice was the soft breeze that twirled around them. Ethereal!  Hopper stepped forward gingerly. "The Locke Jewel. The last shard to piece together the Starwood Crystal. Where’s it hidden?" Blaire pursed her lips. "I’ll trade, as you know. Tell me your deepest secret. One you’d kill to hide." Chipper tensed. Hopper hesitated. There was a lot at stake, when she prodded, “The Pigs are closing in. Time is of the essence here, Rabbit ! If you don’t choose, you lose." Papa Koala warned, " ...
